GiveOrcas
December 2nd-11th
Make an impact in our community and support local nonprofits this holiday season with meaningful gifts of $10 or more. The Orcas Island Community Foundation hosts a collective giving campaign twice a year with GiveOrcas. During these campaigns, OICF solicits applications from local nonprofits to share specific funding needs and then helps the organization reach out to the community for funding. GiveOrcas grants are generously supplemented with funds from the OICF Community Endowment Fund and their Partners in Philanthropy. This holiday season, OICF is also teaming up with the Orcas Chamber of Commerce as part of the Holiday Shop Local Passport contest. If you donate to GiveOrcas, visit the OICF or Chamber offices and get a special stamp for your center square. Every completed passport gets an entry in the shop local raffle. If your center square is stamped indicating a donation to GiveOrcas, you’ll double your entry! It’s the perfect way to Give Local and Shop Local. For more info, visit giveorcas.org

Adult Art Class: Mini Canvas Painting
December 11thth from 5:00-6:30pm at the Orcas Senior Center
Join art teachers Brook and Jessie this winter for adult art classes. During this 1.5-hour session, all materials will be provided as you learn art techniques and create something to take home. Each class is $25, financial assistance is also available through the Park & Rec office. Paint a tiny landscape or a small snowflake, or a design of your choice on a tiny canvas. These small canvases can be wonderful, tiny artworks, great for small spaces. They can even be used as ornaments. Get out and Hike

Cold Springs Trail – Difficult

4.3 miles. 2058 feet elevation gain. Cold Springs Trail connects the Cascade Lake Day Use Area with Mount Constitution Rd. and is the trail most often used for training by prospective mountaineers. The trail climbs up the west side of the mountain with numerous switchbacks, creeks, and vistas looking out towards East Sound. Start at the trailhead on top of the mountain beside a picnic shelter and head down for an easier route, or commence your hike from the Day Use Area for a rigorous journey that locals use to prep for hiking in the Cascade Mountain Range. This hike can take a few hours going up or down, and several flat promontories are great for snack breaks and picnics. Hikers can travel from the trailhead across Mt. Constitution Rd. to the Little Summit/Mount Constitution trail for further mountaintop adventures. Biking is permitted during the offseason.

Kingfish Inn – By Simon

A Brief Overview The evening started, as it so often does, with a glass of Prosecco, but it was some time before and only shortly after my dinner companion and I arrived outside the restaurant that we began to catch the enchanting smells wafting from the open kitchen.  These were followed closely by the bright orange glows shining off the polished metal kitchen appliances that were visible to us, glows from whatever freshly flambéed food the Chef had been working on. Nestled on what could be considered a hill, with some imagination, overlooking west sound and its accompanying marina, Kingfish Inn (est. 1902) appears at first to be a…
