Drop-In Peer Grief Support Group

Gather in a supportive, non-judgmental space to process grief and mourning with the Drop-In Peer Grief Support Group Wednesdays at 10am at Orcas Senior Center. This group is designed to help normalize your feelings, facilitate healing, and provide understanding. This is a safe space to explore your thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment. Fidget Quilts Workshop
November 19th from 1:00-4:00pm at the Orcas Senior Center
This hands-on session is designed to guide participants in crafting small, tactile quilts that offer comfort and engagement for individuals living with dementia. Fidget quilts feature interactive elements such as zippers, Velcro, buttons, ribbons, and textured fabrics—designed to keep hands busy and minds soothed. Brenda will provide sewing machines, basic materials, and step-by-step guidance. Sample quilts and handouts will also be available to spark ideas and creativity. Whether you’re new to sewing or an experienced quilter, all are welcome. Donations of materials are appreciated to help support the project. No registration required. Questions? Estate Planning Workshop
November 19th at 1:00pm at the Orcas Senior Center
On Wednesday, November 19, at 1pm, Orcas Senior Center will welcome Phil George from Safe Harbor Legal Solutions for an in-depth discussion on estate planning. George will address four essential goals to keep in mind when preparing for the future, including protecting your finances from uncovered long-term care costs, minimizing death taxes, safeguarding your ability to remain in your home, and reducing the potential burden on your family.

Level 2/3 Ballet 16+
November 19th from 5:30-6:50pm at Orcas Center
Adults Ballet classes are a great way to learn basic ballet steps at the barre to help stretch and strengthen your body. Some ballet classes will learn short choreography in the middle of the floor and work on turns, leaps and jumps. Dancers of all levels are welcome to come give these classes a try. Register Here

Story Night at Orcas Center
November 19th from 7:00-8:30pm
The spoken word shared in community is humanity’s oldest form of art and a vital means of connection. Orcas Center, in collaboration with Phil Klein, is presenting Story Night, an evening of sharing true stories among friends. All are welcome on Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 7 to 8:30pm in the Madrona Room. Entrance is by donation at the door. Storytellers include Frank Loudin and Kady Fox. It will be a quarterly event, and this night’s theme is “holding on and letting go.” Tickets can be purchased at www.orcascenter.org or at the door.

16+ Adult Volleyball
Wednesday/Sunday from 7:30-9:30pm at the Old Gym
Join adult volleyball players in the gym to learn volleyball and put your skills to the test in rounds of short games. New and experienced players are invited to join and play along. Several players are needed to help set-up and remove the net each time. Indoor shoes are required. Balls and a first aid kit are provided. Pay $5 for a one-time drop-in, or pay $30 for a 6-month all access pass and allows you to drop-in to any adult sport, including soccer, basketball, and ultimate frisbee.

Mount Constitution Loop – Difficult

6.7 miles. 1,490 feet elevation gain and loss For a great exploratory trek across Mount Constitution’s steep eastern face try the Mount Constitution Loop trail. Park at Mountain Lake to commence a steep climb towards the crest of the mountain where the trail will join with the Little Summit to Mount Constitution Trail. Follow the route through wooded hills, with marvelous views of Lummi Island and the Salish Sea, towards the summit and stone tower lookout. Once at the summit, the trail crosses the parking lot and continues down to Twin Lakes, then running south for a shaded woodland hike through the park’s largely undisturbed wooded interior back to Mountain Lake. Ambitious hikers can continue on the Mountain Lake Loop Trail, or cut straight back to the camping area. Make sure to come well prepared for this long, invigorating hike through some of Moran State Park’s most variable and primal terrain.

‘Tis a tale as old as time (or at least two hundred and fifty years, give or take): Man put meat, butter, and oil together, cooked it, and the best food in the world was made! Okay, maybe a bit of an exaggeration; what you need to know is this: I love southern cuisine. Yes, I do realize most of it is likely not the healthiest option out there (heck, even the greens are usually slathered in butter and salt), but southern food is still one of the most beloved edible styles out there. Which is quite a bit of preamble to get to my point: Matthew’s Smokehouse & Deli nailed it down easily and left me excited for the opportunity to grace its halls with my gluttonous presence another time. Also, I must be forthcoming with you, dear readers, that though our first foray into the culinary world of Orcas Island was quite the side of the finer things in life, Matthew’s Smokehouse elects for a more stripped-down feel. Seating is open, food is ordered at a counter (as are drinks), and the only service you receive from the staff besides ordering and payment is being given your meal.
