Orcas Today: Wednesday, December 3rd

GiveOrcas
December 2nd-11th
Make an impact in our community and support local nonprofits this holiday season with meaningful gifts of $10 or more. The Orcas Island Community Foundation hosts a collective giving campaign twice a year with GiveOrcas. During these campaigns, OICF solicits applications from local nonprofits to share specific funding needs and then helps the organization reach out to the community for funding. GiveOrcas grants are generously supplemented with funds from the OICF Community Endowment Fund and their Partners in Philanthropy. This holiday season, OICF is also teaming up with the Orcas Chamber of Commerce as part of the Holiday Shop Local Passport contest. If you donate to GiveOrcas, visit the OICF or Chamber offices and get a special stamp for your center square. Every completed passport gets an entry in the shop local raffle. If your center square is stamped indicating a donation to GiveOrcas, you’ll double your entry! It’s the perfect way to Give Local and Shop Local. For more info, visit giveorcas.org

Get out and Hike

Cascade Creek Trail – Easy to Challenging

One of the best paths through the wooded southern section of Moran State Park runs along Cascade Creek, the stream that helps feed Cascade Falls. Traditionally starting at the South Campground of Cascade Lake, the Creek Trail winds through some of the oldest growth on Orcas and brings hikers past many man-made and natural landmarks including the south entrance bridge and the Lower Falls. Hikers can opt to enjoy themselves by the Falls, or continue the trail into the woods and meadows that hem the Creek up to the spillway at Mountain Lake. This trail features some switchbacks, but otherwise is quite easy to handle and a wonderful chance to see undisturbed natural growth and wildlife in the heart of Moran State Park.

A Bite Of Orcas

Orcas Hotel Cafe – By Simon

Overview At Western Washington University, in Bellingham Washington, there is a section of sidewalk outside the Student Union building that the community calls ‘Vendor’s Row’. Local food vendors from around Bellingham –generally four per day and often the same folks –come and sell their food to hungry staff and students. The stand furthest on the left is an Indian vendor. They make an excellent Tikka Masala. Buttery, full of flavor, perfectly paired with seasonal veggies, and all of that for just $5. I remember their food fondly. I find that many times in life the advice “don’t judge a book by its cover” is just bad advice. From an exterior one can often see strong indications of what lay within, for good or bad. A fresh, shiny, and new appearance can convey strong feelings of modern elegance and class. Of being on the cutting edge. While a historic building, refit to be usable, can instill a sense of heritage, history, and charm. Using a historic building as the location for a restaurant is a decision that should be weighed heavily, and the proprietor should be willing to bend to the will of the beams, boards, and windowpanes amongst which they seek to find a home. Fashion experts may…
