Gather in a supportive, non-judgmental space to process grief and mourning with the Drop-In Peer Grief Support Group Wednesdays at 10am at Orcas Senior Center. This group is designed to help normalize your feelings, facilitate healing, and provide understanding. This is a safe space to explore your thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment. Doe Bay Wine Co. Annual NYE Champagne Celebration

New Year’s Eve Indoor Labyrinth Walk
December 31st from 4:00-6:00pm at the Emmanuel Episcopal Parish Hall
An annual community indoor labyrinth walk will take place at the Emmanuel Parish Hall, welcoming all to walk in peace to quiet music as the new year approaches. This reflective gathering offers a chance to release the old year, find renewed resolve, and enter the new year with intention. All are welcome.

Level 2/3 Ballet 16+
December 31st from 5:30-6:50pm at Orcas Center
Adults Ballet classes are a great way to learn basic ballet steps at the barre to help stretch and strengthen your body. Some ballet classes will learn short choreography in the middle of the floor and work on turns, leaps and jumps. Dancers of all levels are welcome to come give these classes a try. Register Here

16+ Adult Volleyball
Wednesday/Sunday from 7:30-9:30pm at the Old Gym
Join adult volleyball players in the gym to learn volleyball and put your skills to the test in rounds of short games. New and experienced players are invited to join and play along. Several players are needed to help set-up and remove the net each time. Indoor shoes are required. Balls and a first aid kit are provided. Pay $5 for a one-time drop-in, or pay $30 for a 6-month all access pass and allows you to drop-in to any adult sport, including soccer, basketball, and ultimate frisbee.

New Year’s Eve at Doe Bay Cafe
December 31st at 8:30pm
Experience the future-nostalgic sounds of General Mojo’s as they perform ethereal jams with glossy sonic landscapes, driving rhythms, and soaring crystalline vocal melodies. Doors open at 8:30pm and the café closes at 12:30am after ringing in the new year!

New Year’s Eve at the Orcas Hotel
December 31st at 9:00pm
Celebrate New Year’s Eve with cocktails, food, music, and plenty of dancing at the Orcas Hotel. The night features guest DJs Michael Antonia and Crocs with Socks to keep the party going into the New Year. This is a 21+ event.

New Year’s Eve at the Lower Tavern
December 31st at 9:00pm
The Lower Tavern is hosting a New Year’s Eve Rhinestone Bash featuring Caleb Klauder & Reeb Willms Band!  9:00pm start time, more info to come. Wear all your sparkles!

Cascade Creek Trail – Easy to Challenging

One of the best paths through the wooded southern section of Moran State Park runs along Cascade Creek, the stream that helps feed Cascade Falls. Traditionally starting at the South Campground of Cascade Lake, the Creek Trail winds through some of the oldest growth on Orcas and brings hikers past many man-made and natural landmarks including the south entrance bridge and the Lower Falls. Hikers can opt to enjoy themselves by the Falls, or continue the trail into the woods and meadows that hem the Creek up to the spillway at Mountain Lake. This trail features some switchbacks, but otherwise is quite easy to handle and a wonderful chance to see undisturbed natural growth and wildlife in the heart of Moran State Park.

‘Tis a tale as old as time (or at least two hundred and fifty years, give or take): Man put meat, butter, and oil together, cooked it, and the best food in the world was made! Okay, maybe a bit of an exaggeration; what you need to know is this: I love southern cuisine. Yes, I do realize most of it is likely not the healthiest option out there (heck, even the greens are usually slathered in butter and salt), but southern food is still one of the most beloved edible styles out there. Which is quite a bit of preamble to get to my point: Matthew’s Smokehouse & Deli nailed it down easily and left me excited for the opportunity to grace its halls with my gluttonous presence another time. Also, I must be forthcoming with you, dear readers, that though our first foray into the culinary world of Orcas Island was quite the side of the finer things in life, Matthew’s Smokehouse elects for a more stripped-down feel. Seating is open, food is ordered at a counter (as are drinks), and the only service you receive from the staff besides ordering and payment is being given your meal.
