Honoring Veteran Roy Myers with a Quilt of Valor
November 12th at 1:00pm at the Orcas Senior Center
A special celebration will be held to honor beloved longtime islander Ron Myers with a Quilt of Valor. Known by many as the community’s cherished “piano man,” Ron has filled countless gatherings with his joyful music. Beyond his musical gifts, he proudly served in the U.S. Air Force for 31 years, flying large aircraft such as the B-52 and later serving as a flight instructor. He retired in 1986 with the rank of Colonel. The Quilt of Valor, a handmade quilt presented to service members and veterans in recognition of their service and sacrifice, was created by Maggie Kaplan. Brenda Bacon will offer a short presentation as part of the tribute to Ron. Guests are encouraged to come early to enjoy Senior Lunch, featuring Ron at the piano and a delicious, healthy meal prepared by Meals on Wheels and More. Salads will be served at 11:30 a.m., followed by a hot meal at noon. The cost is $6 for those 60 and older and $10 for guests under 60—all are welcome.

Pass through their courtyard, and into the dining room. It is one of the most thematic restaurants on Orcas, thematic restaurants being a particular peeve of mine, due to their general reliance on cultural tropes and culinary cliches. Mijitas, however, embraces its south of the border heritage tastefully and embellishes its outdoor seating area and indoor dining room with flares of Mexicana that subtly remind one where they are.
