Marty Isenberg, acclaimed music curator and long-time film enthusiast, comes to Orcas Center on March 22 with a carefully curated playlist honoring the visionary filmmaking of Wes Anderson. The “Wes Anderson Playlist, An Interpretation in Jazz,” will feature a unique selection of songs that reflect the iconic soundscapes from Anderson’s beloved films. Changing Ecology of Diseases
March 23rd from 3:00-4:30pm Odd Fellows Hall
Russel Barsh, director of Kwiáht, a nonprofit conservation biology laboratory in and for the San Juan Islands, will be speaking about the changing ecology of diseases (of wildlife, and people) … from ticks to tropical mosquitos. The Kwiáht lab is working with new partners, including the Washington State Department of Health, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Fred Hutch Cancer Center, to get ahead of shifting patterns in the ways people, pets and wildlife share viruses and other pathogens in our region. This event is by donation.
Conversations with Morality Film Series
March 23rd at 4:00pm at Orcas Center
Join the Threshold Collective for a special four-week series exploring the end of life in all its different expressions. Each event will have a film, discussion, and opportunity to learn about local resources. The Threshold Collective will be in the Madrona Room from 3:30-5:00pm sharing information on a variety of topics. There will be a table with information on MyDirectives, a free online platform that leads you through the process of filling out your Medical Directive. Other tables include The Orcas Conservation/Green Burial Project, Death Cafe, Orcas Library and a proposed “public memorial board” for downtown Eastsound. Films will start at 5pm with discussions following the films. The first film in the series will be Alternate Endings, Six New Ways to Die in America, 2019, a documentary exploring changing attitudes about death in the United States some of the practices being developed or rediscovered.
Lenten Vespers Service

The Orcas Island Community Church will once again host Lenten Vespers services, beginning March 9 and continuing through April 13. These contemplative gatherings will take place each Sunday evening at 5pm in the church sanctuary. Lenten Vespers offers a space for prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal during the season of Lent. Each service will include music, scripture readings, meditation, and a time of silence.
