Robbie Walker, an experienced instructor with years of expertise in drawing and watercolors, will guide you through the techniques she has perfected. Participants are kindly requested to contribute a nominal fee of $10 per session. Please bring your own basic supplies. Ukulele Kanikipila
Mondays from 1:00-3:00pm at the Orcas Senior Center
Experience the joy of making music at Ukulele Kanikipila, Hawaiian for “play music,” Mondays from 1 to 3 pm at Orcas Senior Center. This gathering is open to everyone with an interest in playing music for two hours each week. If you’re a player looking to dive into the world of ukulele playing, join Kathy Collister’s twice weekly for ukulele class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12 p.m. If you are a true beginner Kathy has an 11 a.m. class on Thursdays that will get you up to speed in no time!

Severe Weather Shelter Volunteer Meeting
November 17th at 6:30pm at the Orcas Island Community Church
As the colder months approach, the Severe Weather Shelter at Orcas Island Community Church is preparing to open its doors once again — offering a safe, warm place for those in need during dangerously cold nights. We’re looking for volunteers to help make this vital ministry possible. Whether you can stay overnight, help with setup, provide meals, or assist with coordination, every helping hand makes a difference.  At this meeting, we’ll go over shelter operations, volunteer roles, and how you can get involved this season. Your time and compassion can bring warmth and hope to our community this winter.

18+ Goaltime
November 17th 6:30-8:30pm at the Orcas High School Gym
Goaltimate games on the full court in the gym. Goaltimate is a type of indoor ultimate frisbee where small teams work together to successfully throw the frisbee through an arch in the middle of the court. New and experienced players are invited to join a team. The gym opens at 6:30pm each Monday, and play continues through 8:30pm. Indoor shoes are required. Balls and first aid kit are provided. Pay $5 for a one-time drop-in, or pay $30 for an all access pass that last 6 months and allows you to drop-in to any adult sport, including soccer, volleyball, and basketball.

16+ Tango
November 17th at 7:30pm at Oddfellows Hall
This ongoing course will provide you with a solid foundation in technique to enjoy the music, the dance, and an evening out with a wonderful community of people. Each class will include elements that build upon each other as well as stand-alone components. Feel free to drop in when you can. When we can connect, regardless of our skill levels, we can enjoy the music, enjoy each other, and enjoy the night! For those with some experience in the Tango world, we will cover La Cruzada, La bocata, and Ochos Adela and Detras. Depending on who attends, we will explore styles of music and embrace. Cascade Lake Loop – Easy

2.7 miles. Slight elevation gain and loss With panoramic views of Cascade Lake and the surrounding hills, this trail is the perfect introduction to the beauty and grandeur of Moran State Park. Parking is available at the Day Use Area, by the South End Campground, or at the western boundary off Rosario Road. The loop is a family-friendly hike with wide, easily marked trails and numerous lookouts for photo shoots or for just taking a break. The trail runs by each Lake Campground and campers can enjoy daily walks to different sections of the lake. A classic style wood bridge crosses a quiet lagoon on the western side of the lake; a popular spot for swimming and fishing. Trails to Sunrise Rock and Cascade Creek join this trail at the South End Campground; pack a backpack lunch and explore the verdant interior of the San Juans’ largest park. The Cascade Lake Loop is open year-round to hikers only.

A Bite Of Orcas

On the 40th floor of Heron Tower in London, England, there’s a restaurant called Duck and Waffle. I find the symbolism of being so high up as to be above the competition apt in this situation. As one can imagine there is really only one thing that you can order when dining at Duck and Waffle, and regardless of the time of day it’s always on the menu, the Duck and Waffle. In reviewing the meals of my life I find few that can compare to the meal I had on my visit there. That experience redefined my understanding of sweet-and-savory and began my obsession with the perfect duck confit. Beyond the food, the company (a friend of my cousin who I had not met before and have not seen since), the views, and the moment in time when it took place has burned this experience in my mind and has since become one of the highest numbers on my critical-review-yardstick to which all future meals must be measured against. This however is not the meal I will be discussing in this review. The following review will mark the first non-dinner meal we have reviewed.
