Needlework Circle at The Orcas Senior Center

Join this weekly gathering for knitters, crocheters, embroiderers, and all needleworkers at Orcas Senior Center, every Friday at 2pm. Come hang out—no project required! Whether you haven’t knitted in years, want to learn to crochet, or just want to relax and chat, you’ll find a wonderful selection of donated yarn, needles, books, and plenty of friendly advice. Teen Event: Spooky Movie Fridays

Oktoberfest Dinner at New Leaf Cafe
October 24th at 4:30 & 6:30pm
New Leaf Café will be hosting an Oktoberfest Dinner for $85 per guest with two seating options available, 4:30–6pm or 6:30–8pm. Guests will enjoy a family-style evening celebrating the flavors and traditions of Bavaria, featuring classic entrées such as Jäger schnitzel, bratwurst, and beer-braised cabbage, paired with house-made sides including spaetzle, warm German potato salad, sauerkraut, and soft pretzels with beer cheese. To finish, a decadent slice of German chocolate cake will be served as the perfect finale. Each dish will be plated and presented together, inviting guests to pass, share, and create their own personalized plates. Draft beer selections will also be featured to complement the evening’s menu. Below are the reservation links for both seating options:

Art Opening at Orcas Center: Alexis Terry Bouchard

Join the Visual Arts Committee for featured Artist Alexis Terry Bouchard, with a community show, “The Art of Recycling” in the Madrona Room. The evening includes a fashion show highlighting creative pieces made from discarded or found materials. Orcas Island Fall Farmers Market
October 25th from 10:00am-2:00pm at the OISD Cafeteria
The 2025 Fall Farmers Market promises to be better than ever! Now through November, you can head over to the Orcas Island School Cafeteria every Saturday and support your favorite vendors, farmers, and food growers, and catch some amazing musical talent from the stage. Featuring live music by Summer Barbone.

Household Hazardous Waste Cleanup
October 25th from 10:00am-2:00pm at The Exchange
Everything from cleaning supplies to pesticides to epoxies will be accepted. Please DO NOT bring the following:
– NO liquid fuels
– NO paints and stains -these may be brought in to ORS for FREE any other day of the year.
– NO Motor oil and Antifreeze – these are not accepted at HHW events and are $2.00/gallon to dispose of during normal ORS hours.

Camp Orkila Fall Festival
October 15th from 1:00-4:00pm
It’s time for another treasured island tradition! The Fall Festival at Camp Orkila is a free event full of adventure and food, treats, and cider to warm you up. Participate in pumpkin carving, cider-pressing, face painting, archery, climbing at the Climbing Tower, games, zip lining*, and much more! *Please note: you must be 3rd Grade or above to ride the zip line.

Island Hoppin’ Brewery Pumpkin Carving
October 25th at 1:00pm
Join Island Hoppin’ Brewery for a Spooky Night! Celebrate the season with an evening of pumpkin carving, live music by Release the Kraken (starts at 6pm), delicious eats from Poutine Your Mouth, and of course, fresh island-brewed beer! Pumpkins will be available on a first-come, first-served basis — carve one to take home for a small fee or leave it behind to help decorate the brewery. Prizes will be awarded for the best carvings!

Mushroom Identification Hike
October 25th at 2:30pm at the South Arch Parking Area
Please join local naturalist River Augenstein for this series of FREE mushroom identification hikes “Waterfall Fungus Foray” – Cascade Falls Loop from South Arch – 2.5 miles roundtrip on the beautiful “waterfall trail”. Moderate with some uphill. Meet at South Arch parking area. You will learn about many of the regions distinctive mushroom species; where they grow, how they live and and which species are edible or medicinal. There will be an emphasis on mycological nomenclature using the binomial system of classification. All hikes begin at 2:30pm sharp, meet at Trailhead. Call 360.376.5080 for more information. Actors Theater of Orcas Presents: Orcas Sings B’way
October 25th at 7:00pm at The Grange
Actors Theater of Orcas Island (ATOI) is excited to announce their first gala fundraiser — ORCAS SINGS B’WAY! This will be the show of a lifetime as your friends and neighbors sing their hearts out performing their favorite Broadway songs! Who knew that the guy who built your deck has a great baritone voice or that the young woman who cleans your house has perfect comic timing? Some great Orcas cooks are planning refreshments for your enjoyment during the evening — including, yes, Paula’s cookies — and generous Orcas donors are providing a selection of wines.  Tickets for the evening are $45. All funds go to support ATOI, the non-profit group whose mission is to enhance our island with performances, education, and community building. Tickets are available now, online at Brown Paper Tickets, or at Darvill’s Bookstore.

Fian & Orcas Dance Collective Halloween Masquerade
October 25th at 7:00pm at the Orcas Center Black Box
Fian and the Orcas Dance Collective are throwing a masquerade in Orcas Center’s Black Box. Doors open at 7:00pm and the show begins at 8:00pm. Costumes are emphatically encouraged, and this event is for all ages. A $10 minimum donation is requested.

American Legion Pancake Breakfast
October 26th from 8:00am-12:00pm
Your favorite Sunday morning activity is back this month with all the pancakes you want, plus your choice of bacon or sausage, two eggs cooked as you like, and coffee, tea, or orange juice!

Cascade Lake Loop – Easy

2.7 miles. Slight elevation gain and loss With panoramic views of Cascade Lake and the surrounding hills, this trail is the perfect introduction to the beauty and grandeur of Moran State Park. Parking is available at the Day Use Area, by the South End Campground, or at the western boundary off Rosario Road. The loop is a family-friendly hike with wide, easily marked trails and numerous lookouts for photo shoots or for just taking a break. The trail runs by each Lake Campground and campers can enjoy daily walks to different sections of the lake. A classic style wood bridge crosses a quiet lagoon on the western side of the lake; a popular spot for swimming and fishing. Trails to Sunrise Rock and Cascade Creek join this trail at the South End Campground; pack a backpack lunch and explore the verdant interior of the San Juans’ largest park. The Cascade Lake Loop is open year-round to hikers only.

A Bite Of Orcas

New Leaf Cafe – By Howie

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. Period, full stop, buck stops there, you get the idea. Though I don’t garner the opportunity to savor a good breakfast often, it warms my heart, body, and soul when I gain said opportunity. Our previous restaurant on the list had to be pushed back due to unforeseen circumstances, but it made for a wonderful brunch in the end. My esteemed colleague and I set sail for a early-afternoon adventure of the taste buds, and if you couldn’t tell by my praise, it was a fine voyage indeed! New Leaf Café is a restaurant located in one of the three buildings belonging to Outlook Inn, one of the premier places to stay for a visit on the island. They have gone through several Iterations and have since settled to doing Brunch and Dinner. However, due to the times we live in, Brunch is the only meal they could serve this season, but we, as food connoisseurs, were not deterred from this fact, boldly striding into the calming atmosphere of New Leaf Café with our heads high, and our appetites… uh… also high? We were hungry, okay? While my esteemed colleague opted for one of his favorites…
